Festool AS-KS 120-R/L Multifunction Stop for KAPEX

At a Glance: Versatile multifunction stop for the Festool KAPEX KS 120 and KS 88, combining secure workpiece retention, Zero Clearance splinter protection, adjustable moulding support and a practical length-stop function for accurate repeat cuts.

Expand the versatility, accuracy and safety of your Festool KAPEX with the AS-KS 120-R/L Multifunction Stop. Designed for the KAPEX KS 120 and KS 88 sliding compound mitre saws, this clever accessory does far more than simply support a workpiece. Its integrated hold-down function keeps material securely positioned against the stop and helps reduce the risk of material kickback, often eliminating the need for time-consuming individual clamping. Sliding Zero Clearance splinter guards support the workpiece directly alongside the saw blade for cleaner, low-splinter cross cuts and make it possible to work safely and accurately with remarkably small sections. The height-adjustable aluminium profile is ideal for positioning crown mouldings and stucco profiles in their original wall position and accommodates mouldings up to 168 mm high. The same profile can also be used as a length stop for repeat cutting, a side insert for groove cutting or as a spacer. With tool-free fitting of the contact plates and splinter guards, reversible positioning for narrow workpieces and a special configuration for tall material and mitre cuts, the AS-KS 120-R/L is an exceptionally useful upgrade for professional joinery, interior fitting, furniture manufacture and trim work.

One multifunction stop – many more possibilities for your KAPEX

The AS-KS 120-R/L combines several commonly required mitre-saw functions into one integrated system. It secures the workpiece against the fence, provides close-to-blade support for small components, helps reduce splintering on the exit side of the cut, supports tall decorative mouldings and can be configured as a repeat length stop. The result is faster setup, better workpiece control and greater consistency when moving between different cutting applications.

Extra Info

Extra Information

  • What is the hold-down function? The aluminium stop profile applies controlled retention to the workpiece, keeping it securely positioned against the fence during cutting. The workpiece can still be moved beneath the stop to align it with the cutting mark before the cut is made.
  • Why reducing kickback matters: A workpiece that is not adequately controlled can move unexpectedly when contacted by the rotating saw blade. The multifunction stop provides additional support and retention to help minimise this risk.
  • What is Zero Clearance? The splinter guard is positioned directly beside the blade and cut to correspond closely with the actual blade path. This gives the workpiece support right up to the cut line and helps reduce fibres breaking away on the exit side.
  • Useful scribe reference: Once the saw has cut into the splinter guard, the resulting groove provides a practical visual indication of the cutting line.
  • Replaceable splinter protection: The splinter guards are wear components. When the cut opening becomes too large to provide effective close-to-blade support, they can be replaced with Festool EP-AS-KS 120-R/L/4 replacement plates.
  • Crown moulding in its natural position: The adjustable stop allows crown and stucco mouldings to be supported in the same orientation in which they will sit against the wall and ceiling. This makes setup more intuitive and helps produce accurate mitres.
  • Up to 168 mm: Festool specifies the system for positioning crown and stucco mouldings up to 168 mm high.
  • Length-stop function: The aluminium profile can slide into the required position and act as a physical reference for repetitive cuts.
  • MFT/3-AR option: For repeated components that must be cut accurately to the same dimension, an optional Festool MFT/3-AR stop rider can be added to the profile.
  • Fold-away stop rider: When the optional MFT/3-AR is not required, it can be folded away so that normal cutting can continue without removing the entire setup.
  • Narrow-material setup: The aluminium profile can be reversed to provide dependable support when working with slender strips.
  • Tall-workpiece setup: Removing the splinter guard and contact plate creates additional clearance when trimming tall material, including workpieces requiring a mitre cut.
  • Additional workpiece clamping: Where the application calls for stronger securing, a fastening clamp can be mounted in either of two positions provided on the multifunction stop.
Especially useful for crown and decorative moulding

Cutting crown moulding accurately can be challenging because the profile normally sits at an angle between the wall and ceiling. The AS-KS 120-R/L lets the moulding be positioned against the adjustable aluminium profile in this same installed orientation. With the profile supported close to the blade and its height set using the integrated scale, repetitive mitre cuts become easier to set up and reproduce. Festool specifies mouldings up to 168 mm for this application.

Pro Tips

  • When fitting new splinter protection plates, make the initial cut carefully so the plate is trimmed precisely to the actual blade path. This establishes the Zero Clearance edge that provides the best support.
  • Replace heavily worn splinter guards rather than continuing to use them with an enlarged blade opening. Close support is what gives the system its clean-cut advantage.
  • When making repeat cuts, produce one test piece and confirm its finished length before committing an entire batch of material.
  • For high-volume repeat cutting, consider adding the optional MFT/3-AR stop rider. It provides a convenient positive reference point for each workpiece.
  • When cutting crown moulding, reproduce the actual wall position carefully and use the height scale to maintain the same setup throughout the job.
  • Keep the same moulding orientation for matching inside and outside corner components to avoid introducing errors between cuts.
  • For very narrow strips, reverse the aluminium profile into the intended narrow-workpiece position rather than trying to support the workpiece with an unsuitable setup.
  • Use the special trimming configuration when a tall workpiece needs extra clearance. Remove the contact plate and splinter guard only as instructed for that setup.
  • When additional security is needed, use a compatible fastening clamp in one of the two available mounting positions rather than relying solely on hand pressure.
  • Keep the contact surfaces free from sawdust and chips. Debris trapped between the workpiece and stop can affect both alignment and finished cut accuracy.
  • Use the blade groove in the Zero Clearance strip as a visual reference when aligning short or detailed workpieces.
  • Always fit a saw blade appropriate for the material being cut, particularly when working with aluminium profiles or coated decorative mouldings.

How to Use

  • Disconnect the KAPEX from its power supply before installing or adjusting the multifunction stop.
  • Fit the AS-KS 120-R/L securely to the compatible KAPEX KS 120 or KS 88 according to the Festool operating instructions.
  • Install the required contact plates and splinter protection components. These parts can be fitted without tools.
  • Position the splinter guards close to the blade and carefully make the initial cut required to establish the Zero Clearance opening.
  • For normal cross-cutting, slide the workpiece beneath the hold-down profile and position it firmly against the saw fence.
  • Align the required cutting mark with the blade position or the scribe reference created in the splinter guard.
  • Make sure the workpiece is securely supported and cannot move unexpectedly before beginning the cut.
  • For repeat cuts, position the sliding aluminium profile at the required length or fit an optional MFT/3-AR stop rider for a positive repeat reference.
  • For crown or stucco moulding, adjust the aluminium profile to support the moulding in its normal wall-mounted orientation and use the scale to establish the required height.
  • For narrow strips, reverse the aluminium profile into the appropriate position to obtain secure support.
  • For tall workpieces or special mitre applications, remove the splinter guard and contact plate and configure the stop for the special trimming position.
  • Where additional workpiece restraint is needed, fit a compatible fastening clamp in one of the two available mounting positions.
  • After completing the setup, make a test cut and verify the resulting dimension and angle before beginning repetitive production work.
  • Regularly inspect the splinter protection plates and replace them once wear compromises their close-to-blade support.

Safety

Safety

  • Always disconnect the KAPEX from the power supply before installing, removing or adjusting the multifunction stop.
  • Wear suitable eye and hearing protection whenever operating the mitre saw.
  • Use suitable respiratory protection and dust extraction when cutting materials that generate harmful dust.
  • Make sure the multifunction stop and all contact components are securely fitted before starting the saw.
  • Ensure the workpiece is firmly supported against the saw fence and multifunction stop before beginning a cut.
  • The hold-down function assists with securing the material but does not remove the need for additional clamping where the workpiece, cut or application requires it.
  • For applications requiring extra workpiece restraint, use a compatible fastening clamp in one of the provided mounting positions.
  • Keep hands well clear of the saw blade and cutting zone, especially when working with short or narrow components.
  • Never hold very small workpieces by hand close to the blade. Use the appropriate support, stop and clamping method.
  • Check that the splinter protection plates do not interfere incorrectly with the saw blade before switching on.
  • Use only saw blades suitable for the material being cut and follow the maximum speed and application requirements of the blade manufacturer.
  • When cutting aluminium profiles, use a saw blade specifically approved for aluminium and follow the appropriate safety precautions.
  • Do not cut twisted, unstable or inadequately supported material.
  • Wait until the saw blade has stopped completely before making adjustments or repositioning components close to the cutting area.
  • Replace damaged, heavily worn or incorrectly cut splinter protection plates before continuing precision work.
  • Always read and follow the operating and safety instructions supplied with the KAPEX and AS-KS 120-R/L before use.
