Why is the DOMINO shape so strong?
The DOMINO's elongated cross-section provides a much larger load-bearing and gluing surface than a conventional round dowel. Festool states that the cross-section of a DOMINO corresponds to approximately three round dowels of the same drilling diameter, helping create an exceptionally stable joint.
How do the glue grooves work?
The moulded glue pockets and longitudinal grooves help distribute adhesive around the DOMINO and along the walls of the mortise. The side grooves also allow excess glue to escape when the joint is pressed together, reducing hydraulic pressure and helping the dowel seat fully.
Perfect alignment from the first DOMINO
The guide ribs on the sides of the DOMINO centre it within the routed mortise. Combined with an accurately routed first mortise, this immediately positions the workpieces relative to one another and helps keep adjoining edges aligned during assembly.
Pro Tips
- Use an exterior-grade adhesive suitable for both the timber and expected environmental exposure when making outdoor joints.
- Apply glue to the mortise walls as well as the DOMINO where appropriate to ensure complete adhesive coverage.
- Use the tight mortise setting for the first locating DOMINO and wider settings for subsequent mortises where a little assembly tolerance is useful.
- Make sure the mortise depth is correctly set so the 40 mm DOMINO has sufficient clearance when the two components are brought together.
- Keep Sipo DOMINOs dry and clean before use so that dirt or contamination does not interfere with adhesive bonding.
- For high-load or weather-exposed structural work, always design the entire joint around the loads, timber species, adhesive and environmental conditions rather than relying on the DOMINO alone.
How to Use
- Mark the required joint positions on both workpieces.
- Fit the appropriate 8 mm DOMINO cutter to the compatible Festool DOMINO joining machine.
- Set the correct mortise depth for the 40 mm long DOMINO and the thickness of the components being joined.
- Route the first mortise accurately using the machine's locating system or reference stops.
- Route the matching mortise in the second component.
- Where several DOMINOs are used, select the appropriate mortise width settings to provide the required combination of precision and assembly tolerance.
- Apply a suitable adhesive to the mortises and DOMINOs.
- Insert the Sipo DOMINOs fully into one side of the joint.
- Bring the mating component into position and press the joint together until the workpieces seat correctly.
- Clamp securely and allow the adhesive to cure according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.
