What is Granat?
Granat is Festool's versatile professional abrasive developed especially for demanding modern coating systems and hard substrates. Its special coating helps prevent premature clogging, while the extraction pattern removes sanding dust efficiently to support consistent cutting performance and a long service life.
Why choose a starter set?
Abrasive selection becomes much easier when several useful grit grades are available together. The D125 GR-Set provides six carefully spaced abrasive grades ranging from P60 to P320, allowing users to experience how each stage contributes to the final surface quality before deciding which individual grits they use most frequently.
P60 - coarse preparation
P60 provides strong cutting action for initial levelling, removal of suitable coatings and preparation of surfaces that still require significant material removal.
P80 - controlled initial sanding
P80 continues to remove material efficiently while creating a more controlled scratch pattern than P60. It is useful as the next stage after coarse preparation or as a starting grit where very aggressive sanding is unnecessary.
P120 - intermediate surface preparation
P120 provides a balanced intermediate sanding stage, reducing scratches from coarser abrasives and moving the surface toward finer preparation.
P180 - fine surface refinement
P180 further refines the sanding pattern and is useful when preparing fillers, coatings and other suitable surfaces for finer finishing stages.
P220 - fine finishing preparation
P220 produces a finer scratch pattern than P180 and is particularly useful where additional refinement is needed before moving to very fine sanding or a subsequent finishing process.
P320 - advanced fine refinement
P320 provides the finest grit included in the starter set. It is intended for advanced surface refinement where a fine, controlled sanding pattern is required before subsequent coating or finishing operations.
Why use progressive grit stages?
Each abrasive grit leaves a characteristic scratch pattern. Moving progressively through appropriate grits allows each stage to remove the marks produced by the previous abrasive. This is generally faster and produces a more consistent result than making excessively large jumps between grit grades.
What is StickFix?
StickFix is Festool's quick hook-and-loop abrasive attachment system. The sanding disc presses directly onto the compatible sanding pad and remains securely attached during use. When another grit is required, the disc can simply be peeled away and replaced without clamps or separate adhesive.
Effective dust extraction
Granat discs use a special extraction-hole arrangement that helps sanding dust move away from the workpiece and into a compatible dust extraction system. Keeping loose particles away from the sanding interface helps reduce clogging, protects the prepared surface and contributes to more consistent results.
Pro Tips
- Do not automatically use every grit in the set on every project; choose the starting grit according to the condition of the surface.
- Begin with P60 only when significant levelling or material removal is required. A surface already in reasonable condition may be better started with P80 or P120.
- Use progressive grit changes rather than jumping directly from a very coarse abrasive to P320.
- Clean the workpiece between grit changes so loose coarse particles do not contaminate a finer sanding stage.
- Match the extraction holes in the Granat disc carefully to the sanding pad for optimum dust removal.
- Connect a suitable Festool dust extractor wherever possible to make full use of the abrasive's extraction design.
- Use light to moderate pressure and allow the sander and abrasive to perform the cutting rather than forcing the machine into the workpiece.
- For paint and clear-coat applications, follow the coating manufacturer's recommended final sanding grit before recoating or polishing.
How to Use
- Inspect the workpiece and determine the appropriate starting grit according to the amount of material that must be removed.
- Switch off the sander and disconnect it from the power source, remove the battery or disconnect the compressed-air supply before fitting the abrasive.
- Select the appropriate Granat disc from the P60, P80, P120, P180, P220 or P320 assortment.
- Align the extraction-hole pattern with the corresponding openings in the compatible 125 mm sanding pad.
- Press the disc firmly and evenly onto the StickFix fastening surface.
- Connect suitable dust extraction where applicable.
- Place the sander flat against the workpiece and sand using smooth, controlled and overlapping movements.
- Inspect the surface frequently to determine when the required result for that grit stage has been reached.
- Remove sanding dust thoroughly before changing to the next finer grit.
- Progress through the necessary grit grades until the required surface quality is achieved.
- Before coating or finishing, clean the workpiece thoroughly to remove residual sanding dust.
Safety
Safety
- Wear appropriate eye, hearing and respiratory protection according to the material and coating being sanded.
- Use suitable dust extraction whenever possible, particularly when sanding paints, fillers and other materials that generate fine dust.
- Determine whether existing paints, varnishes or building materials contain hazardous substances before sanding and follow the appropriate occupational safety requirements.
- Do not sand asbestos-containing or similarly hazardous materials unless the work is carried out by appropriately trained personnel using the required equipment and procedures.
- Ensure each abrasive disc is correctly aligned and securely attached to the sanding pad before operating the machine.
- Replace torn, damaged or excessively worn abrasive discs before continuing work.
- Keep hands and loose clothing clear of the sanding disc while the machine is operating.
- Follow all operating and safety instructions supplied with the Festool sander, dust extractor and the material or coating being processed.
