Product description

Festool HW S8 D18-90° (ALU) V-Groove Cutter 18mm 90°

At a Glance: Carbide-tipped 90° V-groove cutter with 18 mm diameter, 8 mm cutting length and 8 mm shank, specially designed for machining aluminium composite panels.

The Festool HW S8 D18-90° (ALU) is a specialised V-groove cutter developed specifically for accurately machining aluminium composite panels. Its 90° cutting geometry produces a precise V-shaped groove that allows composite panels to be folded cleanly and accurately after routing, making it especially useful for cladding, display construction, sign work, interior fit-outs and architectural fabrication. The carbide-tipped cutting edges provide excellent durability, while the 18 mm cutter diameter and 8 mm cutting length are engineered for controlled routing of aluminium composite sheet materials. Used together with a compatible Festool router and guide rail, this cutter makes it possible to produce straight, repeatable folding grooves with professional accuracy.

Purpose-built for folding aluminium composite panels

This cutter is not simply a general-purpose decorative V-groove bit. It is specifically designed to machine a precise 90° groove into aluminium composite panels so the remaining material can act as a controlled folding line. When used correctly with a suitable router and guide rail, it allows clean, straight and repeatable folds for professional panel fabrication.

Why route a V-groove in aluminium composite panels?

Aluminium composite panels consist of outer aluminium skins bonded to a central core. By routing a controlled V-shaped groove through one face and most of the core while leaving the opposite outer skin intact, the panel can be folded accurately along the routed line. This technique makes it possible to form clean edges and corners without cutting the panel completely apart.

Why the 90° profile matters

The geometry of the groove determines the resulting fold. A 90° cutter produces a groove suited to forming a right-angle bend when the routing depth and remaining panel thickness are correctly set.

Why use a guide rail?

Long folding lines must remain straight if the finished panel is to form accurately. Using a compatible Festool guide rail helps keep the router on a precise path and makes it easier to reproduce parallel or repeated grooves across multiple workpieces.

Why carbide-tipped cutting edges?

Aluminium composite panels can be abrasive to cutting tools. Carbide-tipped edges offer greater wear resistance than conventional softer cutting materials, helping maintain a clean cutting profile for longer when the cutter is used correctly.

Pro Tips

  • Always make a test groove in an offcut of the same composite panel before machining the finished workpiece.
  • Set the routing depth carefully so the rear aluminium skin remains intact when the application requires a fold rather than a complete cut.
  • Use a guide rail for long grooves to maintain a straight and consistent folding line.
  • Support the entire panel properly to prevent movement or vibration during routing.
  • Use effective chip and dust extraction to keep the cutting area clear.
  • Inspect the cutting edges regularly and replace the cutter if the carbide becomes chipped or excessively worn.
  • Confirm the panel manufacturer's recommended groove geometry and remaining material thickness before production work.

How to Use

  • Confirm that the workpiece is a suitable aluminium composite panel and determine the required folding line.
  • Disconnect the router from the power supply before fitting the cutter.
  • Install the 8 mm shank into the correct 8 mm router collet and tighten it securely.
  • Position and secure the guide rail along the intended groove line.
  • Set the routing depth carefully according to the panel thickness and required remaining material layer.
  • Make a test cut on an offcut to confirm both groove geometry and fold behaviour.
  • Connect suitable extraction and ensure the panel is fully supported.
  • Start the router and allow it to reach operating speed before engaging the cutter with the panel.
  • Guide the router smoothly and consistently along the rail without forcing the cut.
  • Inspect the completed groove before folding the panel.
  • Fold the panel carefully along the routed line using an appropriate support or folding method.

Safety

Safety

  • Wear suitable eye, hearing and respiratory protection during routing.
  • Disconnect the router before fitting, removing or adjusting the cutter.
  • Ensure the 8 mm shank is correctly and securely clamped in the router collet.
  • Do not use the cutter if the carbide cutting edge is chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged.
  • Secure and fully support large composite panels before routing.
  • Use appropriate extraction to remove chips and dust from the cutting area.
  • Follow the aluminium composite panel manufacturer's instructions regarding routing depth and folding technique.
