Festool LR 32-SYS Hole Drilling Set
At a Glance: Complete professional 32 mm hole-series routing set for producing accurate, repeatable cabinet shelf-pin holes, fitting holes and 35 mm concealed-hinge recesses with compatible Festool routers and LR 32 hole-line guide rails.
Bring true system accuracy to cabinetmaking and furniture construction with the Festool LR 32-SYS Hole Drilling Set. Designed around the internationally established 32 mm cabinet-hole system, this comprehensive routing accessory set transforms a compatible Festool router and LR 32 hole-line guide rail into a highly accurate and repeatable hole-series system. It is ideal for producing precisely spaced shelf-support holes, rear-panel support holes, furniture-fitting holes and concealed-hinge recesses without laborious measuring and marking for every individual hole. The FP-LR 32 guide plate runs accurately on the perforated LR 32 guide rail, while its spring-loaded positioning rocker indexes positively from one 32 mm position to the next. A centring mandrel ensures that the router is positioned accurately on the guide plate, and fine adjustment allows guide play to be set for smooth, precise movement. The set also includes the essential carbide-tipped cutters for common cabinetry work, parallel side fences for accurately positioning the guide rail from the workpiece edge, longitudinal stops for repeatable positioning and fastening clamps for securing the guide rail. Everything is neatly organised in a compact SYS3 M 112 Systainer³, making the LR 32-SYS an outstanding professional solution for cabinetmakers, kitchen installers, furniture manufacturers and serious woodworking workshops.
The LR 32 system is based on a standard 32 mm pitch between consecutive holes. Instead of measuring and marking every drilling position individually, the router is mounted to the FP-LR 32 guide plate and guided along the regularly perforated LR 32 guide rail. The spring-loaded positioning mechanism indexes the router precisely from one hole position to the next, helping produce straight, evenly spaced and repeatable hole rows quickly. The same system can also be positioned accurately from the front, rear and side edges of cabinet panels, making it exceptionally useful when manufacturing matching cabinet components.

Extra Info
Extra Information
- What is the 32 mm system? The 32 mm system is a widely used cabinetmaking standard in which consecutive fitting and shelf-support holes are positioned 32 mm apart. This creates a modular layout that makes shelves, hinges and other cabinet hardware easier to position accurately and consistently.
- Hole diameters: The Festool LR 32 system can be used to create common hole-series diameters such as 5 mm and 3 mm when the appropriate router cutter is installed. This LR 32-SYS set includes 5 mm cutters.
- Why use a router instead of a hand drill? The router is mechanically indexed by the guide plate and perforated guide rail, substantially reducing positioning variation between successive holes and allowing very straight, repeatable hole rows.
- FP-LR 32 guide plate: The guide plate links the router to the perforated guide rail. A spring-loaded locating rocker engages with each guide-rail indexing hole so the next drilling position can be found quickly and precisely.
- Centring is critical: The supplied centring mandrel is used during setup to ensure that the router spindle is accurately centred relative to the guide plate. Correct centring is essential for maximum hole-position accuracy.
- Parallel side fences: The two side fences establish the distance between the hole row and the workpiece edge. They are particularly useful when producing identical cabinet sides or several panels with exactly the same hole-line position.
- Side-stop adjustment: The side-stop system provides an adjustment range from 0 to 110 mm, allowing the guide rail to be positioned for different cabinet and fitting configurations.
- Longitudinal stops: These help establish the position of the first hole in relation to the end of the panel and make repeated setups considerably faster.
- Standard edge positions: The LR 32 system supports useful standard positioning values including 9.5 mm, 16 mm and 32 mm depending on the selected stop arrangement and application.
- Guide-rail lengths: Festool offers LR 32 perforated guide rails in 1,400 mm and 2,424 mm lengths. The longer rail is particularly useful for full-height cabinet and wardrobe side panels.
- 35 mm hinge cutter: The supplied HW S8 D35 cutter is designed for the common 35 mm concealed-hinge cup diameter found on many European-style cabinet hinges.
- HW carbide tooling: The supplied drilling and hinge cutters use carbide cutting edges for durability and clean machining in suitable wood and wood-based panel materials.
- Systainer³ system: The SYS3 M 112 protects the precision components from dust, spray water and normal transport conditions while keeping the complete LR 32 accessory set together.
Pro Tips
- Always establish a consistent reference edge and reference end on every cabinet panel. Working from the same reference surfaces is one of the most important steps in producing perfectly matching left- and right-hand components.
- Before beginning a production run, make one test panel or use an offcut to verify the hole-line offset, first-hole position and drilling depth.
- Take a moment to centre the router accurately on the FP-LR 32 guide plate using the supplied centring mandrel. Even a small centring error can be repeated throughout the entire hole row.
- Adjust guide-plate play carefully. The plate should slide freely along the guide rail but should not have unnecessary lateral movement.
- Clamp the guide rail before routing. Even when the side fences have positioned it correctly, secure clamping prevents accidental movement during repetitive drilling.
- When producing pairs of cabinet sides, clearly mark the front, top and inside face of each panel before starting. This simple habit helps prevent mirrored hole rows being placed on the wrong face.
- Set the router's depth stop before beginning the row so every blind hole is produced to exactly the same depth.
- Allow the spring-loaded locating rocker to engage fully in each LR 32 guide hole before plunging the router.
- Do not force the indexing mechanism along the rail. Lift or release it correctly before moving to the next position to protect the mechanism and guide rail.
- When drilling long cabinet panels, the FS 2424/2-LR 32 guide rail reduces the need to reposition the rail and helps maintain continuity over the full length of the workpiece.
- Use effective dust extraction with the router whenever possible. Clear visibility around the guide plate and workpiece makes repetitive routing cleaner and easier.
- Check cutter sharpness periodically. A sharp 5 mm cutter produces cleaner holes with less breakout, particularly in veneered, laminated and melamine-faced panels.
- For concealed hinges, always confirm the hinge manufacturer's required cup depth, edge setback and mounting pattern before routing the 35 mm recess.
How to Use
- Select a compatible Festool router and fit it to the FP-LR 32 guide plate according to the Festool operating instructions.
- Use the supplied centring mandrel to accurately centre the router spindle relative to the guide plate, then secure the router correctly.
- Install the appropriate 8 mm shank cutter for the required hole: the 5 mm through-hole drill, 5 mm dowel drill or 35 mm hinge location cutter.
- Set the required routing or drilling depth on the router and confirm the setting on a test piece where possible.
- Fit an FS 1400/2-LR 32 or FS 2424/2-LR 32 perforated guide rail to the workpiece.
- Use the parallel side fences to establish the required distance between the hole row and the reference edge of the panel.
- Use the longitudinal stops to establish the required starting position from the end of the workpiece.
- Secure the guide rail to the workpiece using the supplied FSZ 120 fastening clamps.
- Place the router and guide plate onto the LR 32 guide rail and adjust the guide play so that the plate slides smoothly without unwanted lateral movement.
- Engage the spring-loaded positioning rocker in the required guide-rail indexing hole.
- Switch on the router, allow it to reach operating speed and plunge smoothly to the preset drilling depth.
- Retract the router fully before releasing the indexing mechanism and moving to the next 32 mm position.
- Continue along the guide rail, selecting only the hole positions required for the cabinet or fitting layout.
- After completing the row, switch off the router and wait until the cutter has stopped completely before removing the tool from the workpiece.
- For matching panels, retain the same stop settings and work from the corresponding reference edges to reproduce the hole pattern accurately.
Safety
Safety
- Wear suitable eye, hearing and respiratory protection when routing or drilling wood and wood-based materials.
- Always disconnect the router from its power supply before mounting it to the guide plate, changing cutters or making adjustments.
- Make sure the router is correctly centred and securely fastened to the FP-LR 32 guide plate before use.
- Use only cutters that are suitable for the router, material, application and selected operating speed.
- Check that the cutter is inserted correctly into the collet and securely tightened before starting the router.
- Do not use damaged, blunt, cracked or deformed cutters.
- Secure the LR 32 guide rail firmly to the workpiece with suitable Festool clamps before routing.
- Ensure the workpiece itself is stable and adequately supported before beginning work.
- Keep hands clear of the cutter and underside of the workpiece during routing.
- Allow the router to reach operating speed before plunging the cutter into the material.
- Fully retract the router before moving the guide plate to the next indexing position.
- Never adjust the guide plate, side stops or longitudinal stops while the router cutter is rotating.
- Check for screws, nails, electrical cables or other concealed objects before drilling into an existing panel or installation.
- Use suitable dust extraction whenever possible, particularly when working with MDF, particleboard and other materials that generate fine dust.
- Read and follow the operating and safety instructions supplied with the LR 32 system, router and cutting tools before use.
