Extra Info

Extra Information

  • Why dual-column clamping matters: Many plunge routers lock primarily on one plunge column. The OF 1400 clamps both guide columns, greatly increasing torsional rigidity once the routing depth is locked. This helps the cutter remain accurately positioned throughout the cut.
  • 70 mm routing stroke: The unusually generous plunge travel is particularly useful when working with templates, routing deep recesses or installing fittings that require significant cutting depth.
  • Precise depth adjustment: The integrated fine adjustment allows the selected routing depth to be corrected accurately to one tenth of a millimetre, making repeatable precision work much easier.
  • LED light ring: The supplied LM-OF 1400 extraction bonnet places illumination around the routing area instead of relying on a single directional light. This reduces shadows and gives an excellent view of the cutter and workpiece.
  • Rechargeable light module: The LED module is rechargeable via USB-C. A USB-C charging cable is not included in the standard scope of delivery.
  • MMC Multi Material Control: Festool's electronic control system combines adjustable speed with constant-speed electronics and temperature monitoring. This enables the machine to be matched more closely to different workpiece materials and cutter diameters.
  • Spindle stop with ratchet principle: Once the spindle is locked, the open-ended spanner can be worked in a ratcheting motion. There is no need to repeatedly remove and reposition the spanner while changing a cutter.
  • FastFix: Festool's quick-change concept makes compatible accessories easier and faster to install or remove during setup changes.
  • Up to 99% extraction: During suitable edge-routing applications, the combination of the chip catcher, extraction bonnet and compatible Festool mobile dust extractor can capture up to 99% of the generated chips and dust.
  • CLEANTEC: Festool's extraction interface provides a secure connection between compatible extraction hoses and the router, reducing the chance of the hose becoming detached during operation.
  • Copying rings: Copying rings guide the router along a template while keeping the cutter a controlled distance away from the template edge. On the OF 1400, compatible copying rings can be changed without tools.
  • Variable speed is important: Large-diameter router bits generally require a lower rotational speed than small cutters. Always follow the router-bit manufacturer's permitted speed range.
  • Mineral-material routing: Festool specifies the OF 1400 for routing suitable mineral material with a maximum cutter diameter of 45 mm. Always use a cutter specifically approved for the material and application.

Pro Tips

  • For deep grooves or recesses, make several progressively deeper passes rather than attempting to remove the entire depth in a single cut. This gives better control and reduces stress on both the cutter and router.
  • Make the final pass light whenever surface finish is critical. Removing only a small amount of material on the last pass can produce a noticeably cleaner edge.
  • When routing an exposed edge, test the depth and speed on an offcut of the same material before working on the finished component.
  • Match the router speed to the cutter diameter. Larger cutters generally require lower rotational speeds, while smaller cutters can normally operate at higher speeds within the cutter manufacturer's limits.
  • Let the router reach operating speed before feeding the cutter into the workpiece.
  • Feed the machine smoothly and consistently. Forcing the router too quickly can overload the cutter, while feeding too slowly can cause scorching in timber.
  • When edge routing freehand, normally guide the router against the direction of cutter rotation so that the cutting action helps keep the machine under control.
  • Use the supplied chip catcher whenever the routing operation permits it. The improvement in extraction during edge routing can be substantial.
  • Connect a suitable Festool mobile dust extractor for cleaner work, improved visibility and reduced accumulation of chips around the cutter.
  • Keep the base of the router clean. Fine dust or chips trapped beneath the base can affect accuracy and may mark delicate workpieces.
  • When using a copying ring, calculate the offset between the copying-ring diameter and cutter diameter before making the template.
  • Take advantage of the LED light when working to pencil lines or templates. The all-round illumination makes it considerably easier to monitor the cutter's position.
  • Check that the router bit is inserted to the correct depth in the collet and securely tightened before every routing operation.
  • Never bottom the router-bit shank completely inside the collet. Follow the cutter manufacturer's insertion requirements and minimum clamping depth.
  • For maximum precision with the parallel side fence, make sure both guide rods are correctly seated before tightening the single clamping control.

How to Use

  • Disconnect the router from the power supply before fitting or changing a router bit, collet, copying ring or other accessory.
  • Select the appropriate router bit and confirm that its shank diameter matches the fitted collet.
  • Insert the cutter to the correct clamping depth and use the spindle lock and supplied WAF 24 open-ended spanner to secure the cutter firmly.
  • Fit the appropriate copying ring, side fence, guide accessory or extraction components required for the routing operation.
  • Connect a suitable Festool mobile dust extractor to the 27/36 mm extraction connection whenever the application permits.
  • Set the approximate routing depth using the plunge mechanism and turret system, then use the fine adjustment to dial in the required depth accurately.
  • Select an appropriate motor speed for the cutter diameter and workpiece material.
  • Position the router securely on the workpiece with the cutter clear of the material before switching on.
  • Switch on the router and allow it to reach the selected operating speed before beginning the cut.
  • Plunge smoothly to the preset depth, lock the routing position and guide the machine steadily through the workpiece.
  • For deep cuts, complete the operation in several passes with progressively greater routing depth.
  • At the end of the cut, allow the cutter to clear the workpiece and return the router to its raised position before switching off where appropriate.
  • Wait until the cutter has come to a complete stop before placing the router down or making adjustments.
  • Disconnect the machine from the power supply before cleaning, changing cutters or performing maintenance.

Safety

Safety

  • Wear suitable eye, hearing and respiratory protection when routing, particularly when working with materials that produce fine or hazardous dust.
  • Always disconnect the router from the mains supply before fitting or changing router bits, collets, copying rings or accessories.
  • Use only router bits suitable for the OF 1400, the fitted collet, the workpiece material and the selected rotational speed.
  • Observe the router-bit manufacturer's maximum permitted rotational speed. Never operate a cutter above its rated speed.
  • Make sure the router bit is correctly inserted and securely clamped before starting the machine.
  • Never use damaged, cracked, blunt or visibly deformed router bits.
  • Secure the workpiece firmly. Never rely on your hand alone to hold a small or unstable workpiece during routing.
  • Check the intended cutting path for screws, nails, electrical wiring and other hidden obstructions before routing.
  • Keep both hands in a secure operating position and maintain full control of the router during the cut.
  • Ensure the cutter is clear of the workpiece before switching the router on.
  • Allow the router to reach operating speed before feeding the cutter into the material.
  • Do not overload the machine. Use an appropriate feed rate and make multiple passes for deep cuts.
  • Use effective dust extraction whenever possible and ensure the dust class of the connected extractor is appropriate for the material being routed.
  • Be aware that some timber, coatings and manufactured boards can produce hazardous dust. Follow applicable occupational-health requirements.
  • Wait for the cutter to stop completely before putting the machine down.
  • Read and follow the Festool operating instructions and the safety information supplied with the router and cutting tools before use.
