What is Long Lining?
Long lining (or long reining) is the practice of working a horse from the ground using two long reins attached to the bit or cavesson. It develops the horse's way of going, prepares youngsters for ridden work, and is a useful rehabilitation tool for horses returning from injury.
How to Use
- Young horses: introduce contact, steering and forward without the weight of a rider.
- Schooling: work on bend, suppleness and transitions from the ground, useful for hot or stiff horses.
- Rehab: bring a horse back into work after time off without ridden weight on the back.
- Driving prep: teach a horse to accept rein contact from behind before going to a vehicle.
Setup Tips
Most riders prefer a cavesson when starting youngsters and switch to the bit for refined contact work later. Run the lines through the stirrups (tied together under the belly) or through a roller's surcingle rings to keep them up off the ground. Start with short, straight lines along a wall, then move to circles once the horse is steering reliably.
